Medals of honour

HUNDREDS of vividly-coloured balloons released by cheering children sailed skywards to mark the uplifting launch of Saddleworth’s legendary Village Olympics at the weekend.

Around 1,000 competitors aged 7-16 and representing seven teams across 11 sports, gathered for the start of the annual sporting spectacle, which runs until September 22.

Scores of proud parents thronged Saddleworth School to urge children on during the Olympics, now celebrating its 28th year.

David Wilson, chairman of the organising team, told the crowd: “We are hosting a unique event which works because people do their bit to provide the opportunity for Saddleworth youngsters to play sport, make friends and sustain and build our community.

“London 2012 was the 30th edition of the Olympic Games, Rio in 2016 will be the 31st. By the time we get to Rio, here in Saddleworth we will have celebrated our own 30th anniversary in 2015 and looking forward to our 31st Games in 2016 — a proud achievement.

“But we need help and support from a team of people prepared to put their hand up, get involved and give it a go. Without team managers this event simply would not happen.”

Opening the Games, Richard Barlett, president of Saddleworth Rotary Club said: “The Games are a terrific community asset and a great personal achievement for children, parents, family and friends who work so hard to make them happen.”
