Eee bah gum: a great answer to sticky problem
Date published: 13 September 2013
A solution to the sticky scourge of chewing gum on our streets has been found - thanks to local youth councillors.
The borough will become one of few locations in the north to introduce chewing gum bins — made from recycled chewing gum!
Last year Oldham Youth Council proposed the answer to tackle chewing gum litter to the full council and got unanimous support from councillors.
Three town-centre sites will have the eye-catching recycling bins — the Civic Centre, Oldham Sixth-Form College and Spindles Shopping Centre.
The bubblegum pink bins will hopefully help to reduce the clulncil’s significant annual bill for gum removal. The gum dropped in the bins will be turned into more bins.
Councillor Dave Hibbert, cabinet member for environment and housing, said: “This solution is an historic one - it’s the first scheme officially approved by any local authority for its youth council.”
