FEARS . . . businesswoman Nicola Jeffrey-Skyes
A CHRONICALLY-ILL businesswoman fears she could be cut off from vital medical treatment by a massive sewer scheme that could paralyse Uppermill.
Nicola Jeffrey-Skyes is appealing for help from United Utilities, which plans diversions and road closures for up to eight months.
The utility giant is improving the sewer network on sections of Church Road, New Street and Bolton’s Yard, Uppermill, in a scheme worth almost £1million. But fears are growing that the works could bring hardship for residents and businesses.
Nicola (55) has raised concerns over disabled and ambulance access to her farmhouse home off Church Road. She receives medicine and oxygen supplies and can need emergency treatment. Nicola also cares for her elderly father, who receives dialysis three times a week.
Her letter to United Utilities and Oldham Council says road closures will have a huge impact on her family and support team.
“Because of my illnesses, people visit so I can carry on working. The impact to residents and the local school will severely disrupt our daily lives for a considerable time. Can United Utilities try to create less upheaval for people in the area?”
A spokesman for United Utilities, said: “The last thing we want is to cause upset and disruption to anyone and we understand people’s concerns. We are listening to what people are telling us and looking hard if there is more we can do to ease the strain.”
