Councils’ help for runaways praised

OLDHAM Council has been praised for its commitment to improve the lives of young runaways.

In its latest report, the Children’s Society has highlighted the council’s work as an example of good practice.

The report — Making Runaways Safer — coincides with the first anniversary of the charity’s Runaways Charter, which Manchester City Council has also signed.

While missing, many youngsters are at serious risk of being sexually exploited or becoming involved in crime or gangs.

Rob Jackson, area director for the Children’s Society in Greater Manchester, congratulated the two councils for their efforts to help improve the outcomes for runaways in their area.

He said: “I’d like to thank Oldham and Manchester for their commitment to putting young runaways at the heart of what they do, and taking steps to create a safety net for young people.”
