Cyclist wins pothole damages

A cyclist has won a claim against Oldham Council for a pothole accident in which fell from her bike and broke her cheek and jaw and damaged her teeth.

Fran Millar, head of business operations for Team Sky, the professional cycling team, pursued the claim after being thrown from her bike in Uppermill in 2010.

Fran attempted to avoid a pothole but instead rode into a bigger one caused by roadworks. She wasn’t wearing a helmet at the time and landed heavily on her face and hand.

She has now successfully claimed undisclosed damages to compensate her for time off work, the injuries and damage to the bike.

Fran said: “I feel extremely lucky to be back on my bike again. A crash like this happens so suddenly it can shake your entire confidence on the bike.

“We are now a cycling nation and councils must make sure that we can all enjoy the road safely.”

Councillor Dave Hibbert said: “There is a national pothole funding crisis — Oldham is no different.

“We’re glad Fran Millar has made a full recovery. We would advise all cyclists to wear helmets when riding.”
