Blown away by band’s talent!

TALENTED members of Oldham Music Centre Youth Wind Band have been presented with a prestigious award during a special ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

The musicians earned the Music For Youth Partnership Award for their performance during the National Festival of Music for Youth at Birmingham Symphony Hall in July.

The award was particularly poignant for the band’s long-time conductor, Roger Meaden: the performance had been his last before retiring from the Oldham music service.

Gerard Booth, director of music for Oldham, said: “It was an honour to collect the award on behalf of the band and Roger. This is the first time these special partnership awards have been given, and the wind band’s success was mirrored by the brass band from Crompton House School, which received the award for their section.

“These young musicians are a credit to Oldham; they thoroughly deserve this recognition.”

The band will have a specially-tailored day working with top musicians at the Birmingham Conservatoire, which sponsored the award, in the New Year.
