UNDER construction ... at the town hall are (l-r), Jason Ward of Morgan Sindall; Oldham Council Leader Councillor Jim McMahon, Oldham Council Director of Development Darren Jones, Morgan Sindall managers Ben Cushway, Andrew Barker and Steve Ratcliffe.
COUNCIL chiefs have handed the keys of the former Oldham town hall to contractors who will turn it into the town’s new cinema and restaurant complex.
Construction and regeneration group Morgan Sindall Group PLC now has full access after concluding a deal with the council.
The rebirth of the Grade II-listed building is a centrepiece of regeneration plans for Oldham town centre, bringing seven cinema screens and six restaurants by 2015. The council will appoint a cinema operator next month.
Oldham Council leader Councillor Jim McMahon said: “Today marks the start of the physical work that will see this amazing building returned to use.
“The old town hall is a fantastic regeneration project — rescuing an important and historic building that was at risk of being lost forever and using it to spark economic growth and provide the amenities we need.
Initial work will involve full structural and planning surveys. Work will include securing the facade of the historic building and safeguarding other heritage elements, such as the Egyptian room and courtrooms.
Barry Roberts, area director for Morgan Sindall said: “The development will bring new life to Oldham’s town centre and give the local community an entertainment centre to be proud of. It’s great to be able to bring our extensive experience to this development.”
