Wanted: Angelic winter helpers
Date published: 22 October 2013
“SNOW angels” are being sought to help Oldham’s housebound and elderly this winter.
AT Oldham Council on Wednesday, Lib-Dem councillors Val Sedgwick and Alan Roughley will propose the establishment of a scheme to support vulnerable people who might otherwise be stuck at home in bad weather.
Tasks for the Snow ANgels might include clearing snow from paths and pavements; the council would provide volunteers with tools gloves and grit.
Councillor Sedgwick said: “It’s a common-sense approach to encourage local people. We should encourage those willing to help their neighbours and community.
“But this is about more than just snow clearance. This is about neighbours looking out for neighbours, from collecting a prescription or buying a loaf to looking in on a neighbour to chat and make sure they are safe and warm.”
Some areas already have such schemes: Waltham Forest council in London has over 500 volunteers.
Councillor Sedgwick offered a message for those who see pitfalls in the plan: “It’s a myth that by helping a neighbour one can be liable under health and safety regulations.
“Spreading a little grit after clearing some snow doesn’t make you responsible for use of that cleared area.”
