COUNCIL chiefs have defended their decision to locate the new Oldham District town hall away from East Oldham.
The newly-formed Oldham District Executive is vacating East Oldham town hall in Greenacres to relocate to Oldham Civic Centre - less than a year after opening.
Councillor Jean Stretton explained, “Members have agreed a location for the Oldham District town hall that can be accessed by all neighbourhoods; members felt the town centre was the best place for it to be.
“There has been no decision to close the East Oldham District town hall building on Holt Street, Greenacres. We are working closely with members of community-run NEON (Networking in East Oldham Neighbourhoods) about the future management of the building. Council staff will work in the building until Christmas, and following the move will still work closely with residents in St Mary’s, Waterhead and St James.”
