Super teen’s lasting legacy

THE sudden death of 17-year-old Alex Carter united a community in grief.

And two years down the line his memory is still bringing people together.

More than 75 people gathered at Fitton Hill Neighbourhood Centre on Friday to see the Mayor of Oldham, Councillor John Hudson, officially open the Alex Carter Memorial Garden.

He said: “Whatever we do today will never compensate, but I think it’s essential that we celebrate not just what Alex was about, but about the community coming together. That is what he would have wanted.”

Supporters shrugged off the rain to show their support for the family of a popular young man who had carried out a huge amount of community work. A gravel path separates two planting areas, each with raised beds, which flank a plot with a plaque commemorating Alex’s life which was cut short on January 21, 2011.
