ARMED robbers, one wielding an axe and the other hand gun, brought terror to a Saddleworth village yesterday when they raided the post office.

The raiders threatened Mandy Gorey, the sub postmistress and staff at her premises in Chew Valley Road, Greenfield, before stealing a quantity of cash and making off on a high-powered motorcycle.

The incident happened at 4.10pm when traffic was building up for the evening rush hour and with parents collecting and returning children home from school.

Police sent a team to the scene and sealed off the post office before beginning house-to-house inquiries seeking any witnesses to the drama.

The post office is situated at the end of a terrace row of property. A notice appeared in the post office window saying it would remain closed until further notice.

Sub-postmistress Mandy is hugely popular in the village and is praised for organising a wide range of fund-raising initiatives in support of local charities and the community.

Greenfield Post Office has been raided before. In 2004 two men carrying a sawn-off shot gun and crowbar screamed at terrified customers before stealing money and fleeing on a red Yamaha motorcycle.
