Enterprise fund to inspire a generation

The Oldham Enterprise Fund gets underway

THE next generation of young entrepreneurs in Oldham were given a major boost today with the launch of an innovative fund to help them start their own businesses.

The Oldham Enterprise Fund — a vital part of Oldham Council’s flagship campaign aiming to create 2,015 employment opportunities by 2015 — will offer financial and expert support.

Inspirational businessman and Oldham ambassador Norman Stoller has donated £1million towards the fund, alongside a council pledge to guarantee every young person in Oldham leaving education at 18 an employment or training opportunity by 2015.

The fund to “Get Oldham Working” was given a high-profile launch at a special business breakfast at Mahdlo youth zone in front of an audience of local businessmen and council leader Jim McMahon.

A co-operative partnership of the council, Oldham Business Leadership Group, the Business Growth Hub, and Blue Orchid — who help fledgling businesses — will provide funding and support to new and existing firms.

Young people are the fund’s primary target, providing them with a helping hand with their ventures.

Events are being held throughout today to help business brains discover more about the competitive financial pot and expert support that could unlock their future plans.

Councillor Amanda Chadderton, cabinet member for education, employment and skills, said: “The Oldham Enterprise Fund is an integral part of the council’s ‘Get Oldham Working’ campaign and it is a fantastic boost for new and existing businesses.

“It involves encouraging enterprise in Oldham, creating a strong skills system which meets local economic demands and bringing more employment opportunities to the borough.”
