Indian sizzlers scoop sausage title

OLDHAM sausages with an Indian twist made by a family of butchers have scooped a top award — and got one over rivals in Yorkshire.

The Bombay Bangers made by Bobby’s Bangers have been named Yorkshire and Humberside’s greatest sausage in a British Sausage Week contest.

Despite originating in Red Rose country, the Oldham sausages were included in the competition’s Yorkshire and Humberside heat because fewer entries come from the Lancashire region.

Despite Yorkshire’s long tradition of pork sausages the judges rated the Oldham bangers as supreme.

Bobby’s Bangers is now based in Chadderton but its roots go back to a butcher’s shop in Higginshaw Lane, Oldham.

James Taylor (33) now runs the business in Summer Street with his wife, Heather.

Speaking about the regional award presented to him by restaurant owner Simon Rimmer, Mr Taylor said: “It was amazing and totally unexpected. We entered and went along to the ceremony for a day out. We were up against really strong competition and were chosen from 300 entries. So to win the regional title is staggering.

Recipes
“The Bombay Bangers blend pork with spiced, caramelised pineapple and are finished with coriander. Heather wanted to do an Indian-theme sausage.

“We tried a few different recipes including mango, which was a bit too sweet. Once we got the Bombay Banger ingredients right, we thought it tasted great.

“Sausages have had a real resurgence. People are keen to try all sorts of varieties. There are some really good, unusual sausages made across the UK, which is great.”
