Remembrance Day service at Oldham war memorial.
SUNSHINE favoured the brave on Remembrance Sunday as Oldhamers came out in force to pay respect to those who gave their lives for their country.
Bright sunlight shone throughout proceedings as the Oldham Scottish pipe band lead the march along Market Street to the war memorial.
The Mayor’s chaplain, Canon John Sykes led service from outside the old town hall where hymns were sung and prayers and readings were made.
Wreaths were laid at the war memorial by dignitaries, servicemen, members of the emergency services and local community groups as a mark of respect to those who lost their lives in the First World War.
The Mayor Councillor John Hudson, joined at the ceremony by his wife and Mayoress Kathleen, was delighted with the number of people who joined him in paying respect and welcomed the sunshine after a day of rain on Saturday.
He said: “The turnout was fabulous and the weather is fabulous. It’s almost like divine intervention that it should be like this today compared with what we had yesterday.
“It’s lovely for me as the mayor to see the sun shine and so many people here joining me in paying tribute to those brave men and women who gave their lives for us.
“It has made it a real remembrance Sunday.”
Remembrance Sunday was marked at churches across the borough with Royton, Shaw, Failsworth and Lees just some of those holding services of their own.
