Petition bid to put bills on ice
Date published: 12 November 2013
THE recent cold snap provided the perfect opportunity for Labour to promote its campaign to freeze energy bills.
Debbie Abrahams, MP for Oldham East and Saddleworth, took to Oldham town centre to ask the public to sign a Freeze the Bill petition, showing them how much they could save with Labour leader Ed Miliband’s plan to halt increases from May, 2015, to the start of 2017.
And she had a utility bill frozen in a block of ice to illustrate the point.
Mrs Abrahams said: “Energy bills have risen by almost £300 under David Cameron and his failure to tackle these rip-off bills has meant that many people are struggling to pay them and are facing a cost-of-living crisis.
“I know how people in Oldham and Saddleworth are struggling with the rising cost of living. Many of my constituents have told me how worried they are about their energy bills, and having to make a choice between heating their homes or buying food.”
