AN Oldham couple have spoken of their pride at watching their great-granddaughter sing at the Royal British Legion’s Festival of Remembrance in London, where she was reunited with her dad as a surprise.
Jean and Bill Prior, of Lord Street, attended an afternoon ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall on Saturday where Megan Adams (10) sang with the Poppy Girls.
However, there were more tears for the couple when they later watched Megan on TV, giving a second performance on Saturday night, when the emotional scenes with her dad were captured on TV.
Megan lives in Stirling, Scotland, but speaks regularly to her Oldham great-grandparents.
Mrs Prior (78) said: “Megan has always loved singing. She sings at home all the time. She started having singing lessons a few years ago and also plays the piano. She likes pop music and bands like One Direction but she had been practising the Poppy Girls song for the past few months.
“She and the other Poppy Girls were chosen from thousands to perform at the Royal Albert Hall. She was over the moon about being chosen.
“We are so proud of her. It was such a moving event.
“We speak to her regularly on the telephone at home and went on holiday with her earlier this year in Blackpool, where we have a caravan. She’s a lovely girl and we’re all very close.”
Megan was reunited with her father, Royal Navy Lieutenant Commander Billy Adams during the evening remembrance festival. It was attended by the Queen and Prime Minister David Cameron.
The young singer told the hall audience how she was disappointed that her father could not be there to see her perform because he was stationed in the Seychelles. However, Lt Cmdr Adams then appeared and walked down some steps as an astonished Megan ran towards him, crying. Her dad had returned to the UK three months early from duties in the Indian Ocean.
