Mumps cleared for demolition work

DEMOLITION work on a number of empty properties at Mumps was set to start today — with trams due to run through Oldham town centre early in the New Year.

The town’s new Metrolink line is on course to open ahead of it scheduled spring, 2014.

Meanwhile, bulldozing the derelict buildings will mark another milestone in the regeneration of the town centre and pave the way for new opportunities.

The properties include 155 Yorkshire Street (formerly Andy’s Autos), 157-159 Yorkshire Street (formerly Shoelines), 1 Mumps (formerly Oldham Hotel), 29/31 Mumps (formerly Regent Stores) and former commercial properties at the Regent Street/Partington Street junction.

All of the properties, apart from 155 Yorkshire Street, have been vacant for a number of years and are in a derelict state. The work is expected to last up to eight weeks.

Once completed the cleared site will help to improve the appearance of a key gateway into the town centre. The buildings form part of a bigger portfolio of properties purchased by Oldham Council from a property receiver.

It is expected further demolition will take place in early 2014 and that the cleared site will be used to contribute to future redevelopment plans for the area.

The demolition work is being carried out by Oldham-based D Hughes Demolition following a competitive tender.
