Metrolink freeze sparks apology
Date published: 20 November 2013
METROLINK chiefs have apologised after freezing weather halted services between Oldham and Rochdale yesterday.
Trams were suspended when overhead power lines froze during the early-morning icy blast. Delays were also reported to other services.
Metrolink director Peter Cushing said that icebreaker trams had run overnight to clear frost from the lines, but it had then reformed on parts of the network.
A statement from Transport for Greater Manchester added: “These were unusual circumstances and a number of operators, including rail service providers, also experienced delays.
“We are trialling a new Teflon-based coating on the overhead lines this week which has the potential to reduce icing issues and, if successful, will be applied across the network.”
No problems were reported this morning.
