OLDHAM Sixth Form College is set to get a new extension in the latest boost for the borough’s students.

A two-storey triangular extension to the Duncan Lawton Building at the college’s Union Street West campus will include quiet study and reading areas, PC-equipped rooms, an additional classroom, toilets and a student cafe. There will also be an improved outside area for class-based or individual study and an extension to “The Know”, the college’s library and resource centre.

The Duncan Lawton Building opened in Connaught Street in 1997 and was soon renamed in memory of the former college governor, businessman, high sheriff and vice-Lord Lieutenant, who was awarded the OBE.

In addition to this extension, the cost of which has not been disclosed, OSFC is also investing in an upgrade to its art and design facilities, which will include an exhibition space.

Beverley Beaumont, director of finance and business development, said: “These latest developments will benefit all students at OSFC.”

The college opened a £10 million regional science centre in King Street in 2011.

A decision on the planning application for the extension is expected to be made by officers by mid-December.
