PRIME Minister’s Question Time is no longer fit for purpose and bringing Parliament into disrepute — and loud MPs should be banned from the Commons, veteran Oldham MP Michael Meacher claims.

The Oldham West and Royton MP said the 30-minute event each Wednesday, which allows MPs to ask David Cameron questions, has become a farce.

He wants MPs who continue to shout after being warned to be barred from the Commons for a week.

He said: “Partly because of David Cameron’s style — at times patronising, arrogant, insolent and dismissive — PMQs is no longer fit for purpose. It brings Parliament into disrepute by its noisy rowdiness and its gladiatorial atmosphere. We need to try to restore PMQs to its proper role as a forum for serious discussion of the country’s key issues.”

The Labour MP said the noise during the 30-minute question time had become unbearable.

“The Speaker tries repeatedly to control the noise volume. He should give notice that he will in future ‘name’ MPs who are excessively noisy, and then when he does, it should mean expulsion from the House for a week or more.”
