Pub landlord fights off hammer gang

A BRAVE Mossley pub landlord fought off armed intruders who scaled a wall and tried to smash their way into his pub through a window.
Four masked men armed with a hammer struck at the New Bridge Hotel in Micklehurst Road during an early-morning attack. They climbed on to a first-floor ledge and tried to break in through a window.
The 57-year-old landlord heard the noise and pushed the first intruder back out of the window on to a low roof.
One of the raiders threw a hammer and a roof slate at the have-a-go hero — both of which missed.
The four fled across Station Road in the direction of King Street.
The incident happened at around 1am on Monday, November 25. The four wore balaclavas and dark clothes, though one of the men may have worn light-coloured sleeves.
Det-Constable Karl Riley said: “They hadn’t reckoned on the landlord, who was determined to defend his business come what may.”
