Engineers are carrying out emergency repair work after a water main burst on a key bridge in Saddleworth.
Locals reported water gushing from a stone arch on the A6052 Dobcross New Road section of the bridge which runs over the Huddersfield Narrow Canal near Brownhills visitor centre.
United Utilities were due to shut off the main and investigate the cause of the leak, but Initial examinations suggested no structural damage, despite some lifting of the highway surface over the bridge.
Helen Wilson, from United Utilities, said: “We arranged for it to be fixed - but couldn’t isolate the main because the valves were buried when the road was resurfaced about six months ago.
“The repair will now involve digging up a longer section of the road. Once we have permission, we’ll get on with the repair.”
