A DOODLE on a discarded beer mat has given a quirky boost to a much-admired local charity.
Cleaners at the Swan Inn, Dobcross, handed their unusual find to Michael Powis and Tim Newbold, who run the pub.
The beer mat had been split and a detailed black-and-white drawing of a country scene drawn by a mystery artist who signed himself only “Paul”.
Said Michael: “It was a pretty picture so I posted it on Facebook and Twitter. Before long, people online were intrigued and one suggested auctioning it for charity.”
More and more bids rolled in so Michael decided Oldham Mountain Rescue Team would benefit - and eventually top bidder, Mike Coulter from Greenfield arrived and handed over £20 for the auction item.
“Mountain rescue is a great organisation,” he said. “I don’t know the artist’s identity, but I plan to frame the beer mat for my office.”
Mick Nield of Oldham Mountain Rescue Team said: “The beer mat drawing really is a different way of raising funds. We’re delighted so many people help to support us.”
