SADDLEWORTH is stepping up a gear to prepare for the arrival of the world’s most famous cycle race.
The Tour de France will pass along the area’s border with West Yorkshire, and groups, businesses and associations have been urged to stage events in the lead-up to the ‘grand depart’ on July 5-6.
In a message to the community, Councillor Barbara Beeley, chair of Saddleworth and Lees District Partnership, said: “If you are planning an event to celebrate cycling, French food or culture — or would like help to organise one — please get in touch as soon as possible.
“It doesn’t matter how big or small, our district team at the offices in St Chad’s, Uppermill, are on hand to help and advise.”
Detailed information about promotional and other opportunities is already being circulated surrounding the iconic race which is expected to attract a 3.5 billion audience worldwide and draw thousands of spectators to the area.
With Saddleworth’s proximity to the route — especially the second stage on Sunday, July 6, which travels through Calderdale and Kirklees — there is an added opportunity for local organisations to benefit. Free promotional activity will be taking place from this month under the umbrella of Visit Oldham with the council planning to allow temporary campsites to be established for the Tour De France weekend and the weeks before and after the race.
Other benefits include grants for new/improved cycling facilities available to businesses through Transport for Greater Manchester.
Anyone wishing to register an event should contact Christine Wilson, community development officer, on 0161-770 8416 or 770 5195.
