Library prepares for a new chapter
Date published: 31 January 2014
Mossley Library closes its doors for the final time tomorrow... to move to a new home in the George Lawton Hall, 100 yards away.
The Wyre Street building will close at 5pm on Friday as work starts on the move, part of Tameside Council’s need to save more than £6 million from its communities budget this year. Wherever possible the council is closing buildings rather than services
New “Go To” centres will provide shared locations for council services to reduce overall costs.
Unlike Wyre Street, the George Lawton Hall is accessible to all, including people with mobility problems. All the fittings will be new, and flexible shelving will allow for better use by community groups. Wi-fi will be available soon after the opening in mid-March.
Customers will be able to borrow as many items as they need before Friday’s closure; a returns box will be set up at the hall. Users will also be able to return books to any other Tameside library during the six week closure.
A home library service is also available for the housebound. Call 0161- 338 2708 for details.
