OLDHAM Council leader Jim McMahon is in the running for a prestigious accolade for his “outstanding leadership”.

The judging panel for the Local Government Information Unit’s Achievement Awards has shortlisted Councillor McMahon in the “Leader of the Year” category.

The panel says it was impressed by his “strong leadership”, which has helped to bring a “dramatic improvement in service delivery” and “significant improvement in resident-satisfaction rates.”

The panel said Councillor McMahon has “transformed the council and established the co-operative approach as its clear vision.”

The criteria for being shortlisted in the Leader of the Year category included outstanding commitment to the role, having a clear vision that reflects the needs of the community, successfully taking the council forward, commitment to accountability and scrutiny and forging strong relationships with community groups.

The awards ceremony will held at Westminster City Council on February 25 with Eric Pickles as keynote speaker.
