OLDHAM’S director of public health has reacted to a damming report claiming Oldham as the fattest borough in Greater Manchester.

Alan Higgins confirmed “considerable effort” will be made to improve local health.

The Public Health England statistics, revealed in yesterday’s Chronicle, showed that over two-thirds of Oldhamers aged 16 and over are overweight or obese - the highest percentage in Greater Manchester.

Mr Higgins said: “Excess weight is a problem that affects many parts of the country. It is still disappointing that Oldham has topped the list in Greater Manchester.

“We are making considerable efforts to help people of all ages improve their diet, and our two new leisure centres will provide affordable and convenient exercise facilities.”
