Safety boost at danger zebra

CAMPAIGNERS have succeeded in their battle for safety improvements at a Royton zebra crossing.

State of the art LED halos and better road markings will be applied to the crossing outside Royton Town Hall, Rochdale Road, the scene of several fatal accidents over the years.

Safety fears were first ignited in late 2002 and early 2003 after a 76-year-old man and a 67-year-old woman died on the crossing within five months of each other.

Despite a petition, council officers argued in 2004 the site would not be appropriate for a pelican crossing, as it is only 150 metres from a signalled junction.

Councillor Tony Larkin, chairman of Royton District Partnership, said: “The centre of Royton is soon to undergo substantial regeneration which may include a revised road layout, possibly even a change in vehicle routes but these improvements will enhance the current situation until then.”
