A step forward for bike safety

BUSY Oldham road junctions are being fitted with safety mirrors to help drivers to see cyclists.

Locations include the junction at Manchester Road, Frederick Street and Edward Street.

The first “Trixi” safety mirrors are being fitted as part of a £650,000 programme to improve road safety for cyclists.

Local councils have helped to identify 176 junctions across Greater Manchester with a left hand turn that would most benefit from safety improvements.

Some of the junctions will have large mirrors fitted to traffic signals to give drivers of large vehicles better visibility of cyclists, who can be caught in a blind spot between lorry and kerb - potentially dangerously if the lorry is turning left.

The £650,000 has come from the Department for Transport and is administered by transport charity Sustrans.

Councillor Chris Paul, from TFGM, said: “Trixi mirrors and advance stop lines are just a few among many safety initiatives being introduced.”
