WINNER: Dr Nessar Ahmed with his trophy at the second annual British Muslim Awards
A BIOMEDICAL scientist whose work has helped the NHS and diabetes research has been honoured at the annual British Muslim Awards.
Dr Nessar Ahmed from Glodwick was crowned winner in the Services to Science and Engineering category of the awards.
Dr Ahmed works at Manchester Metropolitan University and has conducted groundbreaking research.
Now in their second year, the high-profile awards highlight the work by British Muslims in 22 different fields, ranging from education to charity and business.
Previous nominees have included Olympic gold-medal winner Mo Farah, renowned heart surgeon Sir Magdi Yacoub, “Dragons’ Den” entrepreneur James Caan and Conservative life peer Baroness Warsi.
Dr Ahmed, a reader in clinical biochemistry at the School of Healthcare Science, has been at the university for 18 years and has conducted research and written four influential textbooks.
“It was a bit of a shock when I found out I had even been nominated. I was quite astonished and humbled, as it’s voted for by people all over the UK.
“I had to beat other eminent scientists and engineers from Cambridge, Manchester and Glasgow universities and thought I didn’t have a chance.”
