ADREES Ahmend is considering installing CCTV in his vehicle
OLDHAMERS have come out in support of cabbies as police and Oldham council moved to halt a spate of violent robberies against drivers
Residents have taken to social media and suggested CCTV, partitioning cabs to protext drivers and even membership schemes to combat the attacks.
Twitter users were appalled by the robberies and said that CCTV would protect both drivers and customers.
Collette Mather tweeted: “How awful, the taxi drivers are trying to support their families, the council needs to fit cameras in taxis.”
One user suggested a membership scheme where customers could only book taxis with valid identification numbers, allowing firms to keep an exact check on who was using their service.
Facebook users unanimously agreed with proposals for CCTV in cars, believing that it would make drivers feel safer.
One user highlighted that most forms of public transport use CCTV for the protection of drivers and passengers, so taxis should be no different.
Meetings have taken place between police, councillors and drivers as the borough tries protect drivers.
So far four men aged 23-31 have been arrested on suspicion of robbery.
Councillor Jean Stretton, cabinet member for xo-operatives and neighbourhoods, said: “These attacks are appalling; our thoughts are with all of the victims.”
