RADCLYFFE School pupil Nimra Farooq (front) celebrates World Book Day yesterday with (back, from left) Alima Begum, assistant headteacher Dr Dave Burns, Zak Robinson, author-in-residence Mark Wright, Harrison Radcliff, Cara Hall and school librarian Janine Wild.
SCHOOLCHILDREN across Oldham marked a global celebration of reading with a day of literary fun.
At the Radclyffe School, year 8 pupils were able to meet author-in-residence Mark Wright, who also shared “heroes and villains” creative writing sessions.
Year 7 students took part in an interactive broadcast — “The Biggest Bookshow on Earth”, hosted by CBBC children’s TV presenters Dick & Dom — learning what it takes to write and illustrate brilliant stories. They also logged in to a live webcast from author Robert Muchamore.
Throughout the day students who were “caught reading” were rewarded with prizes.
Members of staff were asked for the titles of “books that changed your life” for an interactive display wall.
Everyone in school contributed and posted comments on books that have made a big difference to them, changed attitudes or just made the reader laugh or cry.
Actors from drama group Adhoc, based in Manchester, visited Hathershaw College dressed up as fictional characters.
Rushcroft Primary School picked a pirate theme for the day and had a visit from Jan Burchett and Sara Vogler, authors of the “Sam Silver: Undercover Pirate” series.
Pupils from reception to year 6 took part in workshops with activities including a pirate treasure hunt, applying for a job on a pirate ship, making wanted posters and much more.
