Police probed over custody incident
Date published: 21 March 2014
The Independent Police Complaints Commission is to look into the treatment of a man in custody who was later admitted to hospital.
Greater Manchester Police arrested a man in the Oldham area on March 4 and took him to Ashton police station at around 1pm. He was put in the cells.
The 48 year old was thought to be drunk, so was regularly checked.
But later that afternoon he was found unconscious and at around 6pm an ambulance took him to Tameside hospital. He was later moved to Fairfield hospital’s intensive care unit in Bury. The man was later taken home.
The investigation will consider whether police applied an appropriate duty of care during the man’s detention and will focus on visits and observations by officers and custody staff, and whether adequate searches were conducted on the man’s arrival in custody.
