£8m leisure centre project goes to planning
Date published: 25 March 2014
DESIGNS for Royton’s new leisure centre have officially been submitted to Oldham Council’s planning committee for consideration.
The £8million centre will be built on land bounded by Radcliffe Street, Park Street and Cardigan Street, opposite the current sports centre.
The centre will have a six-lane, 25-metre swimming pool with spectator seating, a separate learner pool, an 80-station fitness gym, two exercise/dance studios and a car park.
The plans include an application to demolish the existing Royton Pool, police station and other commercial buildings on the site.
The current Royton Sports Centre will not close until the new one is complete — thought to be around autumn 2015.
The application is expected to go before the planning committee in May and marks a further step in the regeneration of Royton’s town centre.
