Filthy takeaway’s suspected gas leak
Date published: 08 April 2014
A TAKEAWAY has paid £3,400 in fines and costs for poor hygiene after an inspector found a potentially dangerous gas leak.
During an inspection of Gold Star in Union Street, Oldham last August an environmental health officer feared a gas leak and forced the owner to call out a gas engineer to fix the problem.
The official found the shop was dirty with thick grease on the floor around the fryer, and mouse droppings on the floors, shelving and in boxes of food. The walk-in fridge wasn’t working.
The takeaway was closed the same day.
Saqander Hussain, a director of Gold Star Oldham Ltd, pleaded guilty at Oldham Magistrates Court to six offences under food safety regulations and the company was fined £300 for each offence plus £1,600 in costs. The takeaway reopened the day after the inspection, following a deep clean.
::THE owner of The Original Gold Star takeaway in Yorkshire Street has asked us to point out that his business, which has a five-star hygiene rating from Oldham Council, has no connection with the similarly-named Union Street business in the story above.
