THE 2014 Oldham Carnival is months away - but organisers are already planning next year’s celebrations and are hoping to return to a traditional street parade.
Organisers are currently talking to Oldham Council about a full parade for the first time in four years.
The parades began in the early 1900s and originally ran from the town centre before ending with the party in Alexandra Park.
The parades ended in 2010 due mainly to costs, and a smaller parade took pace in the park instead.
Event director Paul Davies said: “We’ve kept the parade going inside the park since 2011 in the hope that one day we might return to the streets.
“If we can find a fleet of trucks to hire and police the parade with volunteers, then we feel we can bring it back to its former glory — at first perhaps every two years — one year in the park, next year on the streets.”
During this year’s Oldham Carnival and RootZ Festival, taking place at Alexandra Park, on Saturday, June 22, the parade will continue through the park, starting at 2pm.
