Meacher: HS2 support with reservations
Date published: 02 May 2014
MICHAEL Meacher is on board with plans for high-speed rail — but fears it may not solve capacity problems at Greater Manchester stations.
The Labour MP said the £46 billion HS2 project is “very far from settled” despite a vote in the Commons this week approving the general principles of the bill for a high-speed line between London and the north.
Mr Meacher is supporting HS2 as it is expected to create jobs in Oldham and across Greater Manchester, significantly reduce journey times from Manchester to London and encourage people out of their cars.
Mr Meacher added: “On the other side of the coin, it is true that there are significant capacity constraints for commuters.
“By 2026 peak demand is projected to hit 250 per cent of capacity at London Euston, and 175 per cent at Manchester Piccadilly. There is undoubtedly a looming capacity problem, which has to be dealt with. The question is whether HS2 is the best way to meet it.”
