LIKE father, like son: Paul Scholes turns out alongside his son Arron
POLICE were given the slip on Friday by Manchester United legend Paul Scholes.
At North Chadderton School the former England international opened the scoring in a charity match while playing for Chadderton Park Veterans against the Greater Manchester Police XI.
The game, which raised more than £10,000 for The Christie and the Hadassah Orphanage in Kenya, ended 5-3 to Chadderton Park.
Latics-fan Scholes (39), who lives in Grasscroft, scored his goal after taking on the entire GMP defence and rolling the ball into the back of the net.
At half-time he said: “It’s a good game for a great cause. The Christie is a local charity which is something really important to me.”
The former United star lined up alongside his son Arron (14) - a chip off the old block who wasn’t shy about challenging the boys in blue.
Frank Nolan (56), chairman of Chadderton Park FC and manager of the veterans side, said it was great to be around one of the best footballers ever - and hard not to treat him like anyone else.
“Having someone like Paul on our team is hard to believe sometimes. He just completely fits in with the rest of the lads and gets on with the game. It’s hard to tell him apart from anyone else - apart from his outstanding ability, of course.”
The match was organised by GMP team captain and Manchester United fan Aaron Parmar (28). Each member of the GMP squad donated £100 to the two charities before playing - and demand was so high some would-be players had to be turned away.
Mr Parmar said: “It’s a dream come true to have faced my footballing idol.”
