UKIP claimed three North-West seats in the European elections but missed out on outright victory to Labour, who also claimed three seats, as the Liberal Democrats and the BNP were eliminated.

Liberal Democrat MEP Chris Davies failed to regain his seat and the BNP’s foray into European politics came to an end as Nick Griffin was ousted on results night at Manchester Town Hall.

After seeing Greenfield’s Liberal Democrat MEP Chris Davies lose his seat, a party spokesman said: “This is, of course, a disappointing night and a bad result for the party but we knew that this election would be difficult.”

The Oldham results broke down as Labour 21,740, UKIP 16,211, Conservative 7,244, Liberal Democrats 4,830, Green Party 2,371 and BNP 1,386.

The eight elected members were Theresa Griffin, Afzal Khan and Julie Ward, of Labour; Paul Nuttall, Louise Bours and Steven Woolfe, of UKIP; and Jacqueline Foster and Saj Karim, from the Conservatives.

Ms Griffin said: “We will work across the North-West on the issues that really matter, social participation and a compulsory jobs guarantee. Labour will always be on your side.”

Triumphant UKIP deputy leader Paul Nuttall said: “The age of four-party politics has arrived.”
