GREATER Manchester Police has launched a summer campaign against drink and drug-driving - due to fears the World Cup will increase offending.
The month-long operation will have police officer stop suspected drink drivers and use a new portable drug testing machine to test instantly whether a driver is under the influence of drugs.
The police Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service and the North-West Ambulance Service launched the campaign today to raise awareness of the dangers of driving under the influence.
During last year’s summer drink-drive campaign police carried out almost 5,000 breath tests and arrested 252 people.
Insp Matt Bailey-Smith said: “The World Cup heightens the risk of drink-driving and while we’re not looking to spoil anybody’s fun, we’d urge supporters to plan ahead and arrange transport so they don’t turn an evening of celebration into a lifetime of regret.”
