Tributes flow for dedicated Dorothy
Date published: 03 June 2014
TRIBUTES have been paid to community champion and former parish councillor Dorothy Mary Shaw OBE, who has died aged 91.
Born in Mossley and educated at Manchester High School, Mrs Shaw found her passion for teaching physical education and art. She taught at Lakes Road High School for Girls, became deputy head at St Anne’s CE, Lydgate, and later head of Cooper Street Junior School, Springhead, where she remained until retirement.
Mrs Shaw was a Liberal Democrat councillor on Saddleworth Parish Council for more than 32 years, a former council chairman, and recipient of a long-service award.
Councillor John Hudson, Oldham’s retiring Mayor and Saddleworth Parish Council’s longest-serving member, was taught by Mrs Shaw’s husband, Ellis.
He said: “She was a very good worker for the Liberal Democrats. I am really saddened they have lost a trouper. She was also a defender of Saddleworth against Oldham.”
She leaves a daughter, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
