Mayoral Sunday: the Mayor and Mayoress in the procession
OLDHAM’S new Mayor, Councillor Fida Hussain, paraded through Oldham town centre yesterday, the centre of attraction on Mayoral Sunday.
The historic annual event sees Oldham’s newly-installed mayor march from the Civic Centre to Oldham Parish Church in full civic regalia, surrounded by wellwishers and representatives from a wide range of organisations intent on marking the momentous occasion.
The Mayoral Sunday service was led by the Vicar of Oldham, The Rev Derek Palmer, who was assisted by associate priest the Rev Jean Hurlston.
The Mayor’s chaplain, Manzoor Ahmed Shakir was preacher for the occasion.
He said: “I look forward to him working with everyone in the community to bring people from all backgrounds together.
“I hope the Mayor of Oldham will be working to promote harmony, unity and community cohesion and bring together people from different faiths and cultures.”
