Garden club grows

GREEN-FINGERED residents have been given a kickstart to transform a derelict space into a thriving community garden and small-scale allotment.
Householders in Coppice approached First Choice Homes Oldham’s Respect Our Community Awards (ROCA) and £500 was approved for plants, seeds and tools which allowed the group to make a start on the garden, which stands alongside Coppice Community Centre on Werneth Hall Road.

Robina Kauser, project manager of the garden, said: “Residents had expressed an interest in growing their own fruit and vegetables and have been asking about allotments.
“However, allotments are hard to come by and there is a long waiting list.
“So we looked at this abandoned space and got on with cleaning it up ready for planting.
“Some of our residents have never gardened before but are keen to give it a go.
“They recognise the health benefits of light exercise and the potential for new friendships the community garden will bring.”
Great Places Housing Group has also provided £300 funding for the project and will provide staff time.
