Volunteering a gateway to a career

Date published: 15 July 2014

A RANGE of volunteering positions are available in Oldham for people looking to enhance their chances of finding employment or to give something back to the community.

Service provider Positive Steps, Oldham is relaunching its volunteer base on Thursday which will offer an array of opportunities for people willing to give their time.

On the day of the relaunch the Positive Steps volunteering team will be at its Union Street office offering advice.

Martin Sutton, volunteer co-ordinator, said volunteering is a great way to develop skills and to get back into work.

Mr Sutton said: “We are a very supportive, positive, team offering a tailored service for volunteers.

“For those who are part of our Get Oldham Working scheme, we want to ensure the best possible platform to gain skills and to encourage them back into work.

“We also provide access to our National Careers Service with a range of help, from CVs to interview techniques, to get a great experience from us.”

Mr Sutton also said that volunteering opportunities are not just for those seeking work.

He said: “We are not limited to those who are just wanting to learn skills, we have a number of volunteers who just see this as a chance to give something back to the community. A lot of these are retired or manage their time between their full time jobs and volunteering because they gain so much personally here.”

The volunteering roles on offer include mentoring roles for alcohol and drug misusers and young offenders.

Anyone interested in volunteering can contact the team on volunteering@positive-steps.org.uk or call them on 0161 621 9300.

They are also available on twitter @PSvolunteers and Facebook facebook. com/positivestepsvolun teers.
