Scooter trial on Metrolink a winner

Date published: 15 July 2014

A trial scheme allowing mobility scooter users to get around on the Metrolink tram network is already proving a success.

Halfway through the six-month trial, 32 people have already passed a test and picked up their permit allowing them to travel with their approved mobility scooters on Metrolink.

The trial was a direct response to passenger demand and newly-released Government guidance that, of over 300 types of scooter available, at least 22 models could be accommodated on public transport.

Previously, many people who required mobility aid, such as a scooter, were angry at a lack of accessibility. Noreen Philips, from Shopmobility Manchester, has been helping to manage Transport for Greater Manchester’s permit-assessment process — making sure successful applicants are able to safely manoeuvre their approved scooter around the network.

She said: “It’s been an extremely busy time but wonderful to help so many people get a permit and access the trams.

“All of them have told me what a huge difference being able to use the Metrolink will make to their everyday life.

“There has been a huge amount of interest in the permit scheme and we are taking bookings every day.”
