Monte Carlo or Bust for pals

Date published: 15 July 2014

THERE will be plenty of monkey business when two pals take on a charity challenge in a clapped-out banger.

The duo plan to wear fancy dress while they take a car they bought for less than £250 on a spectacular thousand-mile journey to Monte Carlo.

David Buckley (45) and his friend, Andy Butlin (39), will hit Europe’s roads and cities for three days as they head to Monte Carlo on Thursday.

They have already branded themselves The Northern Monkeys and decked out their 18-year-old VW Golf in eye-catching cartoon animals in support of Macmillan Cancer Support.

They will join a convoy of cars tackling The Monte Carlo or Bust challenge — described by organisers as the ultimate European banger rally adventure.

From Calais, the first day of their challenge takes them from Saint-Quentin to Dijon, the home of fine wines, and includes a visit to the Reims-Gueux racing circuit.

On day two the convoy heads for Lake Geneva, before conquering the Alps over the Grand St Bernard Pass and finishing on the boulevards of Turin.

The final day begins with a visit to the National Automobile Museum and ends when they cross into France and head for the finishing line at ritzy Monte Carlo in Monaco.

The challenge is being backed by Tony Robins, landlord of the Carrion Crow pub in Huddersfield Road, Waterhead.
