Couple planning eco home in green belt
Date published: 22 July 2014
PLANS for an eco-friendly, earth-sheltered home in Diggle have been submitted with a decision to be made at tomorrow’s planning committee meeting.
The detached property, at Holy Lane Farm, Ward Lane, will be built into the hillside, made from recycled and locally-sourced materials and utilise green technologies to create a self-sufficient family home.
The plans have been submitted by Saddleworth couple Paul and Katie Millea who are keen to remain in the area where they grew up, with children Stanley (7) and Betsy (2).
Katie said: “Many young families are struggling to stay in this area due to a lack of affordable housing. This eco-build gives us an opportunity to stay and live in Saddleworth.
“We live in a generation where energy and supply is dwindling as fossil fuels run out.
“This home would allow us to live a green lifestyle in a beautiful area with minimum impact on the land and surrounding environment.”
The proposals are being managed by development consultants Chorlton Planning Ltd which has overseen two similar projects with architects AKA Community on land at Dark Lane, Delph, and Huddersfield Road, Greenfield.
Inappropriate
The plans were recommended for refusal by Saddleworth Parish Council on the grounds it was inappropriate green belt development and the applicants did not show special circumstances.
Councillors also raised concern that there were no facilities for parked vehicles.
However, it is thought the plans will be recommended for approval by Oldham Council, subject to conditions, including a detailed drainage plan, a site survey and ensuring parking provision.
