THE Indian community of Oldham held prayers for the soldiers who lost their lives during the First World War.
In an address made to the congregation, Bharat Sisodia, president of the Indian Association, paid tribute to the 800,000 Indian soldiers who fought alongside Western Allies.
Mr Sisodia told guests, including Oldham’s Mayor Fida Hussain, and councillors Yasmin Toor and Kaiser Rehman: “The First World War was indeed one of the most darkest periods in the history of mankind.
“We are very proud of these men from the Indian subcontinent who showed such immense courage, and bravery to fight in an alien environment making great sacrifices in the war to bring about stability and prosperity to the British nation.
“It is our moral duty not to forget the important part played by these unsung Indian heroes along with their British comrades.”
