KIDS in Alt are getting a GRRRRReat breakfast following cereal manufacturers Kellogg’s inclusion of Oldham in a pilot breakfast project.

Kellogg’s has put snap, crackle and pop sponsorship into a holiday club on the estate to ensure youngsters get a healthy breakfast following research into school holiday eating.

The study showed 17 per cent of parents in Greater Manchester struggle to feed their children three meals a day - and teachers say youngsters return to school looking noticeably thinner.

The club, in Cherry Avenue, has seen around 40 children a day turning up for cereal, toast, fruit and a drink.

The project is one of 14 pilots across the country to help the families whose children usually receive a free school meal or breakfast.

Breakfast club volunteer Red Maguire said it’s a fantastic idea and has been a big help to many families: “It’s the best thing that’s happened in Alt for a long time,” she said.

“Lots of children have been coming to the club on their own and queuing outside before it opens at 9am so it’s clearly needed. It’s such a good idea because it helps lift another burden.”
