TEACHERS gearing up for the new school year have been given a motivational speech by Falkland war veteran Simon Weston.

Mr Weston, a former member of the Welsh Guards, suffered massive burns when his ship, the Sir Galahad, was bombed by Argentinian fighter planes.

Mr Weston visited Hathershaw College to talk to staff getting the best out of themselves and their pupils.

He said: “There are issues around education not necessarily caused by teachers - so any support I can give them is worthwhile. They are, of course, also a lot of fun to work with.”

Mr Weston also talked about his difficulties coping with life-changing injuries and how a lack of confidence can devastate potential.

“I am telling you as teachers that one of your pupils could be the most talented person you have seen - but without confidence it means nothing,” he said. “The difference between winning and losing all comes down to confidence.”

Hathershaw College head David McEntee invited Mr Weston after listening to him at a schools event.

Mr McEntee said: “I found his words really motivational. I thought it would be great for the staff to hear and be inspired by him.”
